Unsung Heroes

The November nine of the World Series of Poker held its share of memorable moments, not the least of which was the 2nd place finish by the true everyman, Darvin Moon.

Moon’s story isn’t special because he put another bracelet in a collection of bracelets. He didn’t have any to begin with. It’s not special because he’s another poker pro proving that the pros truly are the best players in the world. Darvin isn’t what you would consider a professional poker player, at least he wasn’t.

No, what makes Darvin Moon’s story unique is that it is inspirational to all of the people out there who want the common man to do well in his endeavors.

Moon is a professional logger, lives in a mobile home, doesn’t have a computer or even a credit card. Only now, he’s 5.2 million dollar richer.

The one thing that gained Mr. Moon a lot of support during his rally to second place was the fact that he turned down money, good money, from several of the big names in the poker world to wear their apparel, and he turned down several deals for sponsorship.

When asked about his decisions, he said he couldn’t even fathom traveling the world to play poker and discuss it. He simply played his game, and throughout the main event it proved to be a pretty strong one.

You have to admire a man after winning a wheel-barrow full of cash who plans to “go back to working the woods in Maryland and play poker with his buddies like regular folks do.”
